How to play YouTube video while screen is off on Android

In your iOS devices — iPhone and iPad, there should be pre-installed with the built-in browser, Safari. Find and open Safari. Then go to YouTube website. Make sure to open YouTube website within Safari browser and not YouTube app.

On YouTube website, search for the video you want to listen and play the video. Once the video started playing, turn off your device screen. The video will stop playing and this is the different between Safari and Firefox app for Android features.

Now, press Home button to display Control Center. In the Control Center, you will see options to play the video and to control the sound volume. To continue playing and listening to the video, click Play. When the audio started playing, turn off the screen and the audio will continue playing while the screen is off.

Now you can sit back, relax and close your eyes while listening to the YouTube video. Usually, I like to listen to TED talk and lecture videos from YouTube while driving. I create a YouTube playlist and set them to auto-play.

How to play YouTube video while screen is off on Android

To do this, you need to download Firefox browser for Android. You can open Google Play store app on your device and search for Firefox or click this link to directly go to Firefox app. Click Install button to download and install Firefox on your Android device.

Once the installation is completed, Open Firefox and search for YouTube website or type youtube.com to directly go to YouTube website. If your device asks to open with YouTube app, press Cancel to continue open YouTube with Firefox browser.

Search for a video you want to listen to, click Play and when the video starts playing, press the power button to turn off the screen. Don’t worry, the video will continue to play while the screen is off. That’s it, now you can listen to the audio while the screen is off.

There is more, you can even create a playlist on YouTube and listen to them while the screen is off. On YouTube website, log-in to your account and open your Playlist then follow exactly the same steps as I mention above and you will be able to listen to the audio in the series.
